Mrs. Monahan's
Fabulous First Grade

In November we discover all the wonderful things that make us thankful. Our school, our friends, our family! First grade will enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast with our school friends.
Social Studies will take us on a new journey to the continent of North America. We will learn about the pilgrims, the Indians and the discovery of America. Our trip to Pool Wildlands Conservancy will show us how the Indians lived and games the Indian children would have played. We will sing patriotic songs learn about the election process. First grade will also have the opportunity to vote every day!

We have just begun Chapter 4 in our math books. Will will focus on subtraction and counting back. We will visit the computer lab to write story problems of our own. The students have learned many techniques to assist them in addition and subtraction.

Reading with your child is very important as your child grows as a reader. Reading for 20 minutes each night is strongly encouraged! You can read to your child, your child can read to you or take turns.
Have fun with this. Read books, magazines, newspapers and even recipes. Visit your local library monthly.
There are even age appropriate books in our classroom library that can be
borrowed to read at home.

Important Info.

Recess
Our class has a nice long break for recess
every afternoon about 12:55p.m. The weather is becoming much cooler. We will continue to spend time outside everyday so please make sure your child has appropriate outer wear for outdoor recess. I encourage hats, mittens and leggings for the girls! Sneakers are needed to play on the outside equipment. Students may leave a pair sneakers in their cubbies if they wish.

Snack Time
Our class has snack each day about 9:45am
(Monday-Thursday). Please send one healthy snack and drink each day for your child to enjoy at snack time. On Fridays we have our Fun Friday snack! A classroom family will provide a snack and drink for each child in the room.

PLEASE be aware of your
Fun Friday Snack Date!

If your child is a picky eater, you may want to send a "back-up" snack just in case
.

I Ate Too Much
Jack Pretlusky

I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins,
and much too much stuffin'
I'm probably going to die.
I piled up my plate
and I ate and ate
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams
sauces, gravies and jams,
that my buttons are starting to pop.
I'm full of tomatoes,
and french-fried potatoes
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert
so I guess it won't hurt
if I eat just a little bit more.
