Mrs. Monahan's
Fabulous First Grade

May is in the air. It has brought warm weather...fun afternoons outside....and summer fever.
This month we will be taking about Australia. We will learn about the many animals that live there and much more. First grade will be taking our end of the year class trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. That is an awesome adventure. In writing workshop, we are working on poetry. We have learned about various forms of poetry and have written many pieces ourselves.

We are working on Theme 7 in our Language Arts Series - We Can Work It Out
The theme will include many entertaining stories about how to solve everyday problems. The lessons will focus on vowel pairs, homophones, multiple meaning words and sequencing events. The students continue to work on their reading fluency and projecting their reading voices.

Chapter 7 - Geometry and Fraction
We are learning about solid figures and plane shapes. We are identifying flat surfaces, vertices and edges of many different solid figures. We will learn if shapes are congruent and investigate symmetry within plane figures. The class will learn about fractions; equal parts and unit fractions. We continue to practice basic math facts, estimation and problem solving techniques.

It is very important to continue to read regularly throughout the year.
Here are some fun and different ideas to keep your child reading...
Make time every day to read
Read aloud
Read as a family
Read with them
Vacation reading - read about the places you will be visiting
Share a book
Write / read letters written between family members
Scrapbook with journal entries
Read newspapers, children's magazines, "junk mail"
Visit your local library

Snack Time
Our class has snack each day about 9:45am
(Monday-Thursday).
Please send one healthy snack and drink each day for your child to enjoy at snack time.

On Fridays we have our Fun Friday snack!
A classroom family will provide a snack and drink for each child in the room.

These dates will be assigned soon!
If your child is a picky eater, you may want to send a "back-up" snack just in case
.

Important Info.

Recess
Our class has a nice long break for recess
every afternoon about 12:55p.m. The weather is very unpredictable at this time of year. Please make sure your child comes to school with appropriate outerwear! Sneakers are needed to play on the outside equipment. Students may leave a pair sneakers in their cubbies if they wish.

What's Weird About A Mirror
Arden Davidson

What's weird about a mirror
is that I can never see
what my mirror looks like
without me.

I've peeked at it 'round corners
but my forehead I still see.
It still sees me.

I've hung down from the ceiling
by my ankles and my toes,
but it still knows.

I've tried to run right past it,
but as fast as I can go,
I still show.

What's weird about a mirror is
that I have never known
what my mirror looks like
all alone.

I graduated from Moravian College with a degree in psychology and a certification in elementary education.
I began teaching at The Swain School in 2002.
I love teaching and enjoy spending time with my class learning to read and write. First grade is a blast!

When I am not having fun teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and son, Brayden. I also enjoy scrapbooking, reading all kinds of books and being at the beach.
