United States History: Beginnings through Reconstruction
Grounded in the fundamental skills of critical reading, writing, note taking, research, and speaking, this survey course will be an exploration of American life from our country’s beginnings to the Reconstruction era. Themes to be examined include, but are not limited to, American creativity and resolve, the struggle for equality for all peoples, the role of the common man, and the experiment of democracy. Topics studied will frame our nation in terms of our ingenuity and our struggles, setting a foundation for further studies in American history. As students sift through the layers of history, they will always keep an eye on the present with the hopes of understanding how our nation has landed in the place we are today. The central questions concerning the nature of history and how we study history give the course the backbone needed to support such a rich historical period.
