Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

Kindergarten Science at Swain

Swain's kindergarteners participate in two 30 minute science classes per week. Our class periods are filled with interactive, hands-on experiences that promote the natural curiosity, interest, and discovery found in young learners.

In September, kindergarteners at Swain learn the importance of Reusing, Recycling and Reducing as part of our Environmental Stewardship Unit. We create bird feeders out of recycled products and we create 3-D garbage pizzas indicating what percentages of each type of garbage we produce (a pie chart).

In October, we learn about our 5 senses. We do touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing experiments. We also learn about the water cycle. The children will learn how clouds form and what they are made of. We create our favorite clouds, play in the rain, and stomp in puddles. They also might surprise you with words such as precipitation, evaporation, and condensation.

In November, we will learn about nutrition and exercise. We create nutritious meals and play games with the food pyramid. We also create bar graphs of each classroom's favorite foods.

In December, we work on our dinosaur unit. Don't forget the Dinosaur Party!

January will focus on planets and the Earth, the moon, and rocks. This unit aims to develop the overall awareness of the vastness of space and of the many materials that our Earth is made of.

February will focus on identifying colors and sizes of backyard birds and what birds eat as well as learning about colors and sizes of fish and what fish eat. This unit aims at developing an understanding that there are many creatures in our world of all different sizes, shapes, colors, etc.

March will focus on patterns, sequencing, measuring, mixing, separating, rainbows, and shadows. This unit aims at developing a wonder for the phases of matter, why things have color, where shadows and rainbows come from.

April will include work on animals. The purpose of this unit is to begin developing an understanding that our habitat and where we live is different from other places. We will be out exploring and planting in the gardens as soon as weather permits this month!

In May, we will study plants in hopes of developing a love of learning about nature. I hope to use flowers, blossoms, and seeds to make plant books during this unit. We will spend many of our classes outside in the organic garden, native plant garden and grounds surrounding the school

In June, the children will vote on a subject related to science...and Mrs. Bardman will create a curriculum based on the children's desires!

***ASSIGNMENTS - I will be sending homework home infrequently. When it comes home it is expected that there will be parental assistance . I will also send home papers about events and information related to the subjects we are studying in science - these are not required items - they are for enrichment only.
