Slow Down and Read

Summer Reading Program

Summer is often seen as a time to slow down and do things that nourish family life. One of those things should be reading. Everyone seems to agree that summer reading is an important step in creating lifelong readers. Children who read or are read to over the summer develop language skills, maintain and improve reading skills, learn new vocabulary and expand their understanding of the world and how it works. This website is meant to bring together a variety of resources to help parents and students make reading an important part of summer family fun.

Some tips for summer reading:

  • Try to make reading entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable.
  • Encourage children to choose their own books.
  • Be sure that you are a model for reading. Children are copycats.
  • Provide plenty of reading material. Visit your library.
  • Talk about what you and your children read.
  • No child is too old for reading aloud.
