"Afternoon Authors" is the curriculum I have chosen for the students that attend preschool for a full day. I introduce a different story each day and identify the author of that piece of literature. The students are then asked to make predictions for what they think the story will be about based on the title and the picture on the cover. I record their predictions for everyone to see. I then read the story and afterwords the group is lead in a discussion to determine their comprehension of the work. As a group we decide what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story. This gives the students a general idea of the structure of a story. Finally, a follow-up activity is done related to the story. It may be an art project, personal illustration of the story, or their own booklet that summarizes the story in their own words. Here are some snapshots of the children enrolled in the afternoon program. A time of resting, snack, and free play is also a part of the program.
